Alex Jones - Coach

Alex has been involved in hockey since 1988. He played juniors in Nottingham at conference level and represented England before moving to Sheffield for his final season of juniors.

He progressed to playing EPL for Solihull and ENL for Coventry, Solihull, Birmingham and Sheffield. Whilst in Solihull he started to coach and has coached on and off ever since.

Over to Alex himself….

"My coaching style is firstly about getting details right. Ensuring that basics are there and that there is a clear development pathway for players. I’ve coached various ages and levels and for me there’s no secret to improving, it’s all about practice. If you put the time in you’ll progress.”

Alex Jones - Head Coach

I’ve also used video analysis to teach players systems which has been hugely helpful away from the ice but on ice time has been used to become better hockey players through skill development and hard work.

During lockdown I created a free YouTube channel called “Lockdown Hockey”. This was to keep the kids engaged and connected to the game and each other during a tough time.

I had kids from North America, France, Czech, Switzerland, Italy, Poland and all over the UK tuning in live which was amazing.

The videos are still up on the channel so if you ever want a home practice it’s worth checking them out.

Initial sessions are about understanding the level you are all at, seeing weak points and generally getting an idea of what sort of things you may need to build on over the coming weeks/months.

Few things from me regarding structure.

  • players should be warmed up before getting on the ice. We won’t waste valuable time warming up.

  • leave the pucks until you’re told to use them and as soon as a whistle goes they don’t get touched. I’ve seen people get hit in the head and it’s entirely preventable.

  • if you don’t know - just ask. I have a habit of going at 100mph, don’t let that stop you asking. I would rather explain/show you something twice than a drill breakdown.

Thanks

Alex
